“What we see at this site is the best available window into the setting that nurtured the father of our country,” Philip Levy, an archaeologist and associate professor of history of science and technology, published a book titled Notes on the Underground: An Essay on Technology, Society, and the Imagination (Amazon) , David Maisel's Library of Dust canisters. “There are certainly physical and chemical explanations for the ways these canisters have transformed over time,” says Maisel. “But perhaps the canisters also encourage us to consider what happens to our own bodies when we die, and what may happen to the souls that occupied our bodies. Matter, these canisters show, lives on when the body vanishes, even when it has been incinerated to ash by an institutional practice. Is it possible that some form of spirit lives on as well?”
