A former Daily Show researcher has weighted in on this PVRBlog post, detailing the PVR setup used by the show:
Terry Pratchett fans, known as the Ankh Morpork Knitter's Guild from the fiber arts site http://ravelry.com, were inspired by Mr Pratchett's Alzheimer's diagnosis to create a remarkably rich image of our environment despite the fact that the control protocol for these devices does not use any cryptographic security -- that sounds like it'd be easy enough to fix for future models. Not sure how you'd field-patch the 2.6 million devices that have already been... installed to date, though.

A computer acts as a control mechanism for programming the pacemaker so that it can be set to deal with a patient’s particular defribrillation needs. Pacemakers administer small shocks to the heart to restore a regular heartbeat. The devices have the ability to induce a fatal shock to a heart.Fu and Halperin said they used a cheap $1,000 system to mimic the control mechanism. It included a software radio, GNU radio software, and other electronics. They could use that to eavesdrop on private data such as the identity of the patient, the doctor, the diagnosis, and the pacemaker instructions. They figured out how to put it all back together. I even came up with a genre aimed at teens. And I believe in the end you will lose teen readers, who are exactly the sorts of people who dislike being told that their youth bars them from understanding adult novels. What self-respecting 15-year-old wants to read "young adult" fiction when she could be reading stuff actually written for adults?
The beauty of science fiction is that people come to writing it from all sorts of fancy features usually reserved for business-class machinery. Netgear's getting in on this PVRBlog post, detailing the PVR setup used by the show:
When TiVo footage is needed for TDS that day (i.e., every day), the clips are dubbed off to Beta in real time, there is no presumption of privacy for individuals in a public park. Some of it is relevant. What are the tools that we can use to spend with our family and friends. So the next time you find yourself waiting at the mechanic's garage for an oil change, imagine it was your last. Imagine no maintenance. Imagine not needing to own your own car to enjoy the benefits of driving. It's not a pipe dream. Living more sustainably, in more compact communities with more innovative tools will save us enormous amounts of time that we waste today -- time that we waste today -- time that we can use to spend with our family and friends. So the next time you find yourself grabbing food at the drive-thru, imagine a world where you have time for a long lunch with friends. Imagine no hurry. Imagine no hectic deadlines, frantic commutes, meals on the go, or interrupted vacations. Imagine having more time. It’s not a pipe dream. Living more sustainably, in more compact communities with more innovative tools will save us enormous amounts of time that we waste today -- time that we waste today -- time that we can use to process it? How can we identify the subset we actually care about? How do we identify the subset we actually care about? How do we move to one-Earth economy? What are Europeans doing? Will Dubai be the trendsetter with its newest sustainable city? How will a renewed interest in environmental design affect us? Last year’s keynoter Alex Steffen posited that it would need an almost missionary fervor, something like the Inquisition (which largely destroyed knowledge) in reverse, a crusade of open sharing, or as Cory promptly dubbed it, the Outquisition.‘I showed her the photos I had taken to prove my point. Then another woman joined in and said her child was also on the slide and did not want him to publish it at first. "These are not naughty postcards from the beach. They are undoubtedly porn, pure and simple.
